Build Your Own Business (Part 2 – Become an Entrepreneur)
With the official unemployment rate at 32%, many are battling to make ends meet. Even many with jobs are not earning enough to cover their living expenses.
Against this backdrop, I want to encourage you to BUILD YOUR OWN BUSINESS, whether that be in the form of…
- Taking on extra work opportunities,
- Setting up a sided-hustle,
- Selling something or providing a service in their spare time,
- Starting a new small-business venture…
If you are out of work or battling to make ends meet, why don’t you consider becoming an entrepreneur?
WHAT IS AN ENTREPRENEUR?
An entrepreneur is a person who looks for opportunities and takes the step of setting up a business with the aim of making money and building up a new income stream.
You can become an entrepreneur by starting your own business, which hopefully, over time, will help you earn income without having to rely on someone else.
As an entrepreneur you will be making your own decision on how hard you want to work, when you want to work. Entrepreneurs have complete control over their business activities.
If you want to become an entrepreneur, you will need to…
- Be self-motivated,
- Have a basic understanding of how business works, and
- Know how money works,
- Use your time, skills, talents, or expertise to offer a product or service to others,
- Know how to market your ideas so that others will want to use your product or service.
Many are scared to even consider starting their own business because they feel out of their depth.
This is only true if you do something you are not talented, gifted, or experienced in. I would suggest that you only start a business in line with your current work experience and qualifications. I would also suggest that you start a business that drives your passion and that falls in line with your God-given gifts and your unique talents.
Let me assure you that if you can learn a few business principles and marketing concepts, and if you implement a few money management tools, this can put you in good stead.
(You can read a few books or watch a few social media videos on sales and marketing, as well as on how to start your own business)
You can do a crash course in sales and business basics. You can also apply the basic financial principles we have shared on Financial Matters to manage your money well.
You may have heard the old saying that “it takes money to make money” and that you cannot start a business without capital. While this is true in some instances, many opportunities are available where you can start a small business from home, even on a part-time basis, with no capital outlay.
Last week we looked at several basic business ideas you can consider to start your own business, whether you do it full-time or on a part-time basis.
A few examples…
- You can start doing administration and consulting work from home.
- You could bake or make food.
- You could make or fix things
- You could use your current work qualifications and experience to provide a service to others.
- You could offer solutions to other people’s problems.
- You could use your trade and expertise to sell products that can help make other people’s lives easier.
- You can use your spare time to walk dogs or babysit.
- You could start a small child aftercare facility, or provide a service of caring for the elderly.
- You could use your talents to teach, train, or coach others.
- You could use your car to provide a shuttle service.
- You could grow plants if you have green fingers.
- You may have a unique idea that could add value to others.
- You could offer solutions to problems.
- You may have a product or service you are passionate about that could add value to others.
- You could sell something that you are passionate about, or that can make other people’s lives easier, and in return, you can earn a commission.
- If you have spare money, you could buy a small business or use the funds to buy products.
- You could even become a bargain hunter, using your skills and talents to buy something at a low price, fix it up, and then resell it for a profit.
You can start your own business. You can become an entrepreneur.
Can you use your qualifications, skills, experience, and your unique gifts and talents to set up a business that provides a service? You could start your business off small and work from home to cut costs.

Find something you love doing that you are prepared to do for free, And then get so good at it that people will pay you for it! This is living the dream!
