The world is currently a scary place. There is so much uncertainty. Many feel like they are stuck in the middle of a raging storm.

GOD IS YOUR REFUGE AND EVER-PRESENT HELP IN TIMES OF TROUBLE
I want to encourage you to put your hope in God.
If you are living a life devoid of God, if you are filled with worry and anxiety, I want to encourage you to surrender your life and fears to God.
Psalm 46 1-2 tells us that: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear…”
Jesus loves you so much. He knows how many hairs you have on your head and he wants to be your Savior. He wants a close walk with his children.
SURRENDER YOUR BURDENS TO GOD
You do not need to face the current uncertainty alone. And you don’t need to face eternity alone.
Are you feeling stressed out? Are you living in fear? Then:
“Cast all your anxiety on God because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
“Do not be anxious about anything… but rather pray about everything.” (Philippians 4:6)
Jesus told us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
Is the load too much to bear? Are you lost? Have you drifted from God?
No matter who you are, what you have done or where you find yourself, there is hope in God.
The world is currently filled with bad news, but Jesus came to bring GOOD NEWS.
In Luke 4:18, Jesus said that he has come “to bring good news”, and to “set captives free”.
If you are currently in trouble or facing a storm, you can put your hope in God.
Yes, we will face storms in life. Jesus told us that we would face tough times.
In John 16:33a Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble.”
But Jesus didn’t stop there. He went on and said in John 16:33b, “But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Today I want to look at a passage in the Bible that deals with a ferocious storm that arose out of nowhere.
No matter the storm you are facing today, know that Jesus calms storms!
JESUS CALMS STORMS!
Mark 4:35-41 tells us:
35 As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”
36 So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).
37 But soon a fierce furious storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. (the boat was nearly swamped)
38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! (SILENCE) Be still!” Then the wind died down and there was (COMPLETE) calm.
40 Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!”
In this story, Jesus said to his disciples, “let us go to the other side.”
I want to encourage you to GO WITH GOD. Don’t face life or any storm alone. Go with Jesus to the other side.
THE DISCIPLES WERE IN THE BOAT. WHERE WAS JESUS?
Jesus was in the boat with them!
Where is Jesus in your life?
If He is in the boat of life with you, you will be ok!
IF JESUS IS IN THE BOAT WITH YOU, YOU WILL BE OK, NO MATTER WHAT!
In this story it tells us that Jesus and his disciples set off across the lake.
A ferocious storm arises out of the blue and the boat starts to take on water.
The wind is howling. The waves are huge. It is scary!
To make matters worse, it is evening. It is getting dark. The disciples felt absolutely hopeless in their fear. They panicked. They were worried. Troubled. Scared.
Maybe you feel scared or afraid today!
Sometimes we get scared. Sometimes we face uncertain times.
If you are currently facing a storm, don’t forget about Jesus!
1.) IF JESUS IS IN THE BOAT WITH YOU, YOU WILL BE OK
WHAT WAS JESUS DOING?
He was taking a nap. He was fast asleep.
GOD IS ALWAYS AT PEACE, EVEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STORMS OF LIFE!
How can Jesus be sleeping when the others in the boat are freaking out?
Jesus was aware of the storm. He knew exactly what was happening. He was not surprised by the storm or by what was going on.
Jesus was at complete peace.
HOW CAN THIS BE?
How can Jesus be so peaceful in the middle of their fierce storm?
Jesus can be at rest because he is God. He is in control. He has all power and authority. Nothing is too difficult for him. No situation is too far gone. He is our mighty God, our deliverer.
WHAT DID THE DISCIPLES DO?
At first, they panicked!
But then they woke Jesus up…
They asked Jesus, “Don’t you care?”
Of course he does!
Maybe you are in a storm. It may feel like you are all alone.
But know this – You can call on Jesus!
Are you worried? Then go to Jesus! He is God. He can do ALL THINGS.
Isaiah 59:1 says, “Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.”
Psalm 121:5 tells us that, “The Lord watches over you.”
God is watching over you. His arm is not too short that he cannot save you.
Let me remind you that: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear…” (Psalm 46:1-2).
Let these words sink in.
The disciples were petrified. They thought they were going to drown. But they woke Jesus up.
WHAT DID JESUS DO?
Jesus rebuked the storm. He spoke to the wind and the waves. He ordered the storm to: “BE STILL!”
Immediately the wind stopped! The storm passed. There was complete peace. Everything became still. Calm.
In Jeremiah 32:27 God declares, “I am the God of all the peoples of the earth. Is anything too difficult for me?”
No. Nothing. Absolutely nothing is too hard for God. He can do all things.
In the middle of your storm, put your hope in Jesus!
Back to the story…
The disciples were scared. They thought they were going to die.
Jesus rebuked the wind. He calmed the storm.
Yes, Jesus is much bigger, greater, and more powerful than any storm you can ever face.
1.) IF JESUS IS IN THE BOAT WITH YOU, YOU WILL BE OK
2.) JESUS IS BIGGER THAN ANY STORM YOU WILL EVER FACE AND HE CALMS STORMS
JESUS CALMS STORMS
Jesus can calm your storm, but you need him in the boat of life with you.
Without Jesus life can be difficult, but if Jesus is in the boat with you, you will be ok.
When Jesus spoke to the storm and commanded it be still, the storm stopped. It vanished! There was peace and calm.
Let this sink in: Jesus can calm your storm.
If you are scared or overwhelmed by the storms of life, hold tight onto Jesus. You will be ok if Jesus is your Savior.
WHY ARE YOU AFRAID?
After calming the storm, Jesus turned to his disciples and asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
In this scene the disciples know that Jesus is with them, but they are still fearful. They had seen Jesus raise the dead, deliver the oppressed and heal the sick, but they were scared. Why?
Jesus asks you the same question – Why are you afraid?
“If I am with you, you will be ok.”
Is Jesus in your boat? Is he in your life?
If Jesus is your Savior, then God also promises you that he will be with you.
In Hebrews 13:5-6, it tells us that God will “Never leave you and that he will never forsake you.” It goes on and says that “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.” (NIV)
If Jesus is your Lord and Savior, you can rest in him, knowing that he is your helper, and that he will never abandon you.
Isn’t it amazing to think that God wants to walk the journey with you, even through the dark times and storms of life?
If you are living a life devoid of God, if you are filled with worry and anxiety, I want to encourage you to surrender your life and fears to God.
When you are fearful, you will be weak and defeated. Fear attacks like the hypnotic power of the enemy and this can paralyze you.
“The enemy comes to kill, steal and to destroy.” (John 10:10).
IT IS TIME TO RISE UP
It is time to be strong and courageous. It is time to rise-up.
Do not fear. Rise up in faith. Put your confidence in Jesus. He is bigger than any storm. He can calm the storm. The good news is that Jesus can bring peace.
WHO IS THIS MAN?
After Jesus calmed the ferocious storm and brought peace, the disciples asked each other, “Who is this man?”
The disciples stood in awe. They marveled at Jesus saying, “Even the wind and waves obey him!”
You do not need to live in fear and bondage. You need to live with faith in Jesus. Let faith arise in your heart!
1.) IF JESUS IS IN THE BOAT WITH YOU, YOU WILL BE OK
2.) JESUS IS BIGGER THAN ANY STORM YOU WILL EVER FACE AND HE CALMS STORMS
3.) DO NOT LOOK AT THE STORM. LOOK AT THE STORM SLAYER… LOOK TO JESUS
DO NOT LOOK AT THE STORM. LOOK TO JESUS
There is another story in the Bible where the disciples took a boat trip alone while Jesus stayed behind to pray. Jesus’ dear friend, John the Baptist, had been beheaded, and Jesus wanted to be alone to pray. However, the crowds had come to look for him. Although Jesus wanted to be alone, he ended up spending the entire day ministering to the hurting and broken people. He then fed the crowd of thousands with a little boy’s lunch.
It is amazing to see that Jesus is never too busy for you. He loves to heal and build people up.
Jesus can also do the impossible! He can take the little and multiply it into lots. Jesus is our supernatural provider.
After ministering to the crowd, he sent his disciples on ahead, while he stayed behind to pray.
Matthew 14:22-24 tells us, “Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.”
A storm arose unexpectedly. It was dangerous. Jesus knew that they were struggling, and he set off, walking on the water to come to their rescue. It was around 3 am in the morning. There were no boats available, so he walked on water. After all, he can do the impossible.
Today if you are alone and stuck in a storm, if Jesus is not in your boat, then call out to Him to join you.
Matthew 14:25-27 tells us, “Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
Do not fear in your storm! Take courage. Do not be afraid.
Matthew 14:28-29 continues, “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” Jesus said “Come.” Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.”
As long as Peter kept his EYES ON JESUS, he could walk on water.
But he got scared. He looked at the storm, doubt rushed in, and it flooded his heart with fear.
Matthew 14:30 tells us that when Peter “saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink.”
As Peter was slipping into the black stormy waters (remember it’s around 3 a.m.), he cried out: “LORD SAVE ME!”
Matthew 14:31 tells us, “Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
You can cry out to God to save you! You can invite Jesus into the boat of your life.
Jesus helped Peter back into the boat, and something miraculous happened…
Matthew 14:32 tells us that, “when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Jesus once again calmed the storm and brought PEACE.
Do not look at the storm. Look at the storm slayer. Look to Jesus.
Invite Jesus in.
1.) IF JESUS IS IN THE BOAT WITH YOU, YOU WILL BE OK
2.) JESUS IS BIGGER THAN ANY STORM YOU WILL EVER FACE AND HE CALMS STORMS
3.) DO NOT LOOK AT THE STORM. LOOK AT THE STORM SLAYER… LOOK TO JESUS
4.) JESUS CAN TAKE YOU SAFELY TO THE OTHER SIDE
JESUS CAN TAKE YOU SAFELY TO THE OTHER SIDE
In both these events, Jesus calmed storms. He took his friends safely to the other side. After the storm, they arrived on the other side.
By the way…
When Jesus got to the other side, he was met with a man who was bound. He delivered this man and set him completely free.
Jesus then got back in the boat and sailed to a town where he met a man whose daughter was dying. He was on his way to this little girl’s home, when he was interrupted by a lady who had been sick with a blood disorder for 12 years. This lady had spent all her money on doctor’s and they could not help her. Her condition was getting severe. When she bumped into Jesus, she reached out and touched the end of his robe. As she touched him, she was completely healed.
After ministering to her, news came from the sick girl’s home, that it was too late. She had died. Jesus did not listen to this report. He continued to her home, went into her bedroom, and raised her back to life.
JESUS CALMS STORMS. HE DELIVERS THE OPPRESSED. HE HEALS. HE SETS THE CAPTIVES FREE. HE BRINGS ABUNDANT LIFE. NO SITUATION IS TOO FAR GONE FOR JESUS!
Call on Jesus. He can make a way. He can calm your storm, and Jesus can take you safely to the other side.
At the end of life on earth, there is an eternity. In eternity life continues forever, either with God in heaven or separated from God in hell.
Jesus made a way for you to get to the other side, so that you can share eternity with Him in heaven.
Hebrews 4:14 tells us that, “… we have a great High Priest who understands our weaknesses (HIS NAME IS JESUS).
Jesus understands what is up in your life. He knows the real you. He knows what makes you tick. He is aware of your issues and needs, and he loves you!
Hebrews 4:16 continues, “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
COME TO JESUS
Who can come?
- Anyone can come, you can come.
How can you approach God?
- You can come boldly to God’s throne of grace!
Why should you approach God?
- When you come to Jesus, you will find mercy and grace to help you in your time of need.
Jesus loves you so much! He knows how many hairs you have on your head and he wants to be your Savior. He wants a close walk with his children!
SURRENDER YOUR LIFE ALONG WITH YOUR STORMS TO GOD
Is Jesus in your boat? In your life?
If not, surrender your life to Jesus. Invite him into your boat. Into your life.
Are you facing a storm?
Facing storms alone is scary and dangerous. Do not face your storm alone. Jesus wants to do life with you. Call on him. Jesus calms storms!
Storms will pass. The sun will shine again!
Let us ask God to calm your storm…
If you are facing a storm, I want to encourage you to pray Psalm 91 over your life and your your family…
Psalm 91
1 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.
3 For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease.
4 He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
5 Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day.
6 Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday.
7 Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you,
these evils will not touch you.
8 Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished.
9 If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter,
10 no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home.
11 For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go.
12 They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.
13 You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!
14 The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name.“
15 When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them.
16 I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.”
LET US PRAY
Father, while the world is in turmoil, I thank you that you are still on the Throne.
Jesus, I ask you to be my Savior. Thank you for the price you paid on the cross for me, so that I can be set free and live under the shelter of your protection, not only during my temporary life on earth, but right into eternity.
Lord, I ask you to please protect me from the storms and plagues that are hitting the world. Lord, please calm my storm and bring peace.
Lord, please bring healing to my fragile world and my life.
Today I put my life in your hands and thank you that you are my God, my place of safety, my protector and my provider.
I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
