THE IMPORTANCE OF SETTING GOALS

Without set goals you will just drift aimlessly and never achieve your hopes and dreams.

Failing to plan, is planning to fail!

Setting goals forces you to clarify what you want, and it will motivate you to take action.

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when dreams come true there is life and joy” (Proverbs 13:12)

So, I want to encourage you to …

– Dare to dream,

– Review your priorities,

– Set your goals in place to build towards a brighter future

You cannot do much about your past. What has happened is gone! You can however do something about your future. DARE TO DREAM AND SET YOURSELF UP FOR AN EXTRAORDINARY FUTURE.

I would like to suggest a few ideas to help you set your financial goals:

Write down your goals:

“And the Lord answered me and said… “Write down the vision clearly on tablets, so that even a runner can read it.” (Habakkuk 2:2)

This helps to keep you committed to your goals

THE POWER OF SETTING GOALS:

Research done at a large university around 40 years ago: They asked half the class to write down their goals for the future & the other half did not write down any goals. 20 years later they checked up on students. The results were startling…

80% of those who wrote down their goals ended up being successful and achieving goals, while only a small percentage of those who did not write down their goals ended up being successful.

PERSONAL TESTIMONY:

Around 20 years ago when Janet and I were newly-weds, we wrote down our goals – both financial and personal (we were specific). We committed our goals to God. This paper was filed and forgotten about.

Years later we moved to a new house. One day out of the blue, over 10 years later, I found this discoloured piece of paper wedged between two books on our bookshelf.

It was our goals we had set when we first got married. Guess what? Every single goal from our investments, to owning a home, to starting a family, had been achieved!

Something powerful happens when you write down your goals.

Set your financial goals:

Set both personal & financial goals because it will force you to clarify what you want, and it will motivate you to take action

“Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverb 29:18)

How do you do this?

You need to look at your needs, your goals & objectives.

Dare to dream… Aim high

Take your wife (or your husband) out for coffee and chat about your goals & dreams

Answer the following questions:

WHAT?

What are your financial goals and dreams? What do you want?

When you write them down be specific (by when do you want to achieve this? How much do you want/need? etc.)

Once you know what you want to achieve, you can then put a PLAN in place to achieve them.

But first… you need to answer why do you want it…

WHY?

Why do you want to achieve it? What is the reason & purpose? You need to define the purpose.

This will help you to prioritise and get clarity on what you want.

Ask yourself – How important is it to you? What is the most important goal?

Why do I want to achieve this? And by when do I want to achieve it?

How important is it to you? If it is a real dream, you will then do something about it. If not, you never will.

Once you are sure of WHAT you want to achieve and WHY you want it, you need to put a PLAN in place to do this…

HOW?

How am I going to get there?

You need a PLAN. The plan is the MAP of how you can get there.

Without a plan, you are in trouble… without a clear plan you will probably battle to achieve your goals and dreams.

It is important that the plan is mapped out to help you reach your goals.

“Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty” (Proverbs 21:5)

NOTE: It is advisable to sit down with a financial advisor to review and discuss your financial goals and objectives, and to help you construct a plan so that you reach your goals and dreams realistically. This process should point out potential risks and give you guidance on how best to implement t a strategy, so that you can achieve your financial goals.

IF YOU FOLLOW THESE 3 SIMPLE STEPS, YOU WILL SET GOALS…

BUT THERE IS ONE EXTRA STEP THAT MANY MISS, THAT I BELIEVE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP!

COMMIT YOUR GOALS & DREAMS TO GOD

The final and most important step is to commit your plans to God.

God wants a day by day relationship with you. He is able to do the impossible. He does not want you to do it alone. He is interested in you and He wants to be part of all your decisions.

“Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land & prosper. Take delight in the Lord, & He will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust Him, and He will help you.” (Psalm 37:3-5)

“Commit your work to the Lord & then your plans will succeed” (Proverbs 16:3)

So, in conclusion, I want to encourage you to …

Dare to dream!

Write down your goals.

And, don’t forget to commit your goals to God.

Something powerful happens when you SET GOALS!

POWER QUOTES OF THE WEEK:

“I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.” — Mark Twain

Don’t focus on your fears. Most of them will not even materialise. Rather trust in God.

Joshua 1:9 … Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. (NLT)

WHAT DOES GOD HAVE TO SAY:

Be generous…

Proverbs 11:24-25 … “Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything. The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.”

Don’t be lazy…

Proverbs 10:4 … “Lazy people are soon poor; hard workers get rich.”

Work hard and prosper…

Proverbs 13:4 … “Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.”

LET’S PRAY:

Father, while the world is in turmoil, I thank you that I can hold onto you. Thank you for the price you paid on the cross for me so that I can be set free and live under the shelter of your protection, not only during my temporary life on earth but right into eternity. Please protect me from the storms and plagues that are hitting the world. Today I choose to look to you, and to once again, dare to dream. Please help me to set goals that will catapult me into the destiny for which you made me. I put my life in your hands. Thank you that you are My God, My place of safety, My protector, and My provider. I thank you. In Jesus name. Amen.
