The Journey of life
Ecclesiastes 10:2
“A wise person chooses the right road; a fool takes the wrong one.”
The journey of life can be like a roller-coaster ride with many ups and downs. Sometimes life can be an adventure, other times it can feel like you are just going through the motions. Still at other times it can be utterly frightening.
LIFE IS A JOURNEY
On any journey through life, we will face good days and bad days.
- If you are traveling on an open highway, your journey may be smooth sailing.
- At other times you may hit traffic and have to sit bumper to bumper, going nowhere slowly.
- Sometimes we hit roadblocks, where everything comes to a standstill.
- At times you may have to travel on a dirt road riddled with potholes.
- Sometimes the road is straight and wide.
- Other times the road can be narrow and winding.
Depending on the conditions, you have to make adjustments.
- If you are on the highway you might be able to travel fast and get to your destination quicker.
- If you are on a dirt road, you need to slow down. You need to drive carefully, and be extra vigilant and watch out for potholes.
RIDE OUT THE STORMS
Let’s face it, life is a journey. The current stretch of road is a difficult winding road full of bumps and potholes.
To make matters worse, there is a storm raging. This makes the road more dangerous. Visibility is not great.
At times like this it is important that we…
- Keep our eyes on the road.
- Slow down and be patient, and do not panic.
- Put your lights on.
- Be cautious.
Stay on the road.
Yes, in the current conditions, the journey may take you a little longer to your destination. But stay on the road and be careful.
Our life journey often goes through dark valleys and mountain passes, but the road will eventually straighten, and the conditions will improve. And, when the seasons change, and the road conditions get better, you will always be able to make up some lost ground.
2 Corinthians 4:8
“We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair.”
Don’t give up when the road is hard. Stay on the course.
2 Corinthians 4:17-18 NLT
“For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”
Don’t get overly consumed by the temporary storms of life. Don’t be overwhelmed by your troubles. Look forward. Hold onto hope. Fix your eyes on God.
We all face trouble. What storm are you currently facing?
Are you sick, tired, or worn out?
Maybe you are stressed with money problems.
You may be worried about the future or living in dread that is eating you up on the inside.
Maybe you feel like you cannot go on, like you are on the verge of breaking down.
You may be stuck in a rut. Your life may feel like it is falling apart.
You may have taken a hard knock.
Maybe you have drifted away from God?
Maybe you are close to shipwrecking your faith.
Don’t give up. Don’t quit. Don’t get bogged down by the storm. It will pass over and the sun will shine again.
You may have hit a pothole in your life.
You may be on the wrong road.
You may have taken a wrong turn.
If you are travelling in the wrong direction, you can make a U-turn. You can get back on track.
Where are you heading? If you keep going in the direction you are travelling, where will you end up?
Join the dots …
If you are not happy with where you are heading, you can do something about it.
CHOICES
Maybe you are heading on the wrong road, towards destruction.
In life we have many choices. Some decisions we make can lead to destruction. Some decisions lead to a blessed life.
Make wise choices.
In Deuteronomy 30:19, God says …
“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”
God has set before you a CHOICE between LIFE and DEATH, between BLESSINGS and CURSES. And God implores you to CHOOSE LIFE!
Will you choose life?
Jesus Christ is the Saviour of the world. He came to seek and save the lost. (Luke 19:10). He came to rescue you. He came to save you.
TAKE THE RIGHT ROAD
If you find yourself on the wrong road or heading in the wrong direction, then make sure that you get onto the right road.
Ecclesiastes 10:2
“A wise person chooses the right road; a fool takes the wrong one.”
Do you know where you are going? If you don’t know where you are going, you are lost. If you are just drifting aimlessly, you will never arrive, or you may reach a dead end.
CROSSROADS & T-JUNCTIONS
Sometimes we reach a crossroads or a T-Junction, where we need to decide on which road to take on our way forward. The decisions we make can have a huge impact on our future destiny.
Do you turn left? Do you turn right? Do you carry on straight?
At these moments we need to make good choices.
THE BEST ROAD TO FOLLOW
Is your GPS set up? Your GPS will give you the map and the direction. If you follow the GPS guidance you will be able to stay on the right road.
God wants a close relationship with you. He wants to lead you and guide you.
John 16:13
“When the Holy Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.”
In fact, look at what God says…
Psalm 32:8
“The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”
God wants to do life with you. He doesn’t just watch from a distance. He wants to guide you on the BEST ROAD FOR YOUR LIFE. He wants to advise you and keep a close watch over you. He really has your best interest at heart.
THE HIGHWAY AND THE NARROW ROAD
Now, I don’t know if you are aware of it, but Jesus also spoke about roads. And, according to Jesus, in life there is a highway and a narrow road.
One leads to LIFE and one to DEATH.
What road are you on?
Matthew 7:13-14 NLT
“You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.”
According to Jesus…
- MANY are on the HIGHWAY, and this road leads to HELL AND DESTRUCTION.
- And only a FEW are on the NARROW PATH that leads to ETERNAL LIFE.
The narrow road will be more difficult at times, but it leads to abundant life.
Don’t just blindly follow the crowd on the highway to hell.
If you find yourself …
- on the wrong road, or
- if you are just driving without knowing where you are heading, or
- if you have hit a pothole,
I would suggest that you STOP!
Consider your life.
Consider where you are heading.
And make the necessary adjustments.
Maybe you have made bad decisions that have put you in a compromised position. Maybe you have deliberately wandered off the right road and have ended up in bondage to sin.
If you have, then please STOP!
Consider where you are! Consider where you are heading!
U-TURN
If you are heading on the wrong road or in the wrong direction, please consider your ways. And if you are on a road leading to destruction, then do a U-TURN.
Have you ever heard on the word REPENT? Many don’t know that the word simply means TO TURN AROUND, or to do a U-TURN!
If you are on the wrong road or if you are heading in the wrong direction, I would seriously ask you to turn around, and get on the right road.
Acts 3:19 NLT
“Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord.”
THE GATEWAY TO LIFE
Jesus told us that we can only enter God’s Kingdom through the narrow gate. He warned us that many have taken the highway that leads to destruction.
In Matthew 7:14, Jesus said …
“But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.”
You can choose life! You can enter through the narrow gateway to life.
In John 10:9, Jesus said …
“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.”
Jesus is the door that leads to the blessed life.
But stay alert! There is an enemy who wants to lead you astray, off the right path, onto a road of destruction.
In John 10:10a, Jesus says …
“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.”
The enemy’s sole plan is to wreck your life. BUT there is good news. Jesus has come to open up the doorway to abundant life.
In John 10:10b, Jesus continues …
“But I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”
Jesus came to bring life and life to the full.
WHERE ARE YOU HEADING?
If you find yourself on the wrong road, on the road to destruction, do a U-turn and enter through the gateway to abundant life. Get onto the narrow road that leads to the blessed life.
But know this. Even on the right road, we will face storms.
The journey of life can be bumpy and uncertain. Currently you may be facing a huge storm. The visibility may be poor, the conditions may be tough, the outlook may seem uncertain, but stay on the narrow road. Yes, the road may be difficult at present, with many twists and turns and potholes that can trip us up.
But stay on the right road.
Keep pressing on.
Slow down. Be patient. Do not panic.
Put your lights on. Be cautious.
Look forward.
Keep your eyes on Jesus. He is the gateway to life.
The journey is not a sprint. It is a marathon. So, don’t focus on the current storm. The storms of life will come and go. This current storm will blow over and the sun will shine again.
Make good choices. Allow God to lead you. Get on the right road. Keep moving forward with your eyes fixed on Jesus.
Romans 8:28
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Yes, you don’t have to take the journey alone. God wants to join you.
And in Hebrews 13:5 God says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Hold onto Jesus. He will lead you on the best pathway for your life.
